Houses within schools have their origins in the growth and development of public schools in the nineteenth century, particularly changes at Uppingham and Rugby. Merchant Taylors’ is no exception, and houses were introduced first at the Boys’ School and then at the Girls’ School to foster strength in the community.

As the two senior schools merge, so too must our House structures; from September 2025, we will run 4 coeducational Houses with pupils from years 7-13.
